Alexandra gains confidence as a Veteran entering the workforce

“I came to the event a little unsure of what I was walking into... I’ve been wearing an Army uniform for twenty years and did not have a lot of confidence in picking out clothes or doing my hair and makeup,” said Alexandra, while describing her initial thoughts on DFSA’s Veterans event. She was in the process of transitioning out of the Army, and her transition counselor referred her to DFSA.

Her first experience with our organization was our November 2022 Veterans event, where Alexandra and a group of other women Veterans received complimentary professional suitings, make-up, hair styling, headshots, and massages and attended a special workshop on networking.

“At the end of the event, not only did I feel more confident in myself, but I also felt more confident in my ability to dress appropriately when looking for a job,” she said. “I also left with tools and knowledge on how to network and boost my confidence even more.”

Alexandra now has a new job as a Veterans Rating Official for the Department of Veteran Affairs. She reported that she is enjoying the opportunity to help fellow Veterans and looks forward to growing in this new role.

“Women already face many different challenges when they go out into the workforce. Being a woman and a Veteran raises those challenges and can make us feel alone and without support,” Alexandra said.

“We have so much to offer our communities, and knowing there are programs out there that can help us take on these challenges makes us feel supported and accepted.”
