Dottie Watkins shares reminder to young women on International Girls Day

As we celebrate International Girls Day, I want to take a moment to recognize not just the incredible potential young girls hold, but also the profound impact they have on shaping a brighter, more inclusive world. Today is dedicated to supporting their dreams, encouraging their aspirations, and ensuring they feel valued, empowered, and prepared to lead.

Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate to be raised and supported by people who instilled in me that my worth is not defined by my gender. For this, I am deeply grateful. My true motivation to emphasize the importance of International Girls Day, however, came ten years ago when my daughter was born. She is my daily reminder that the work to uplift and celebrate the value of girls remains a critical need in today's world.

At just sixteen, Malala Yousafzai addressed the United Nations, speaking about the importance of listening to, respecting, and protecting all children—girls and boys alike—who need support. She said, “I raise up my voice—not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard.” This powerful statement embodies the strength of girls and women everywhere, reminding us that our voices are not only for ourselves but for those who still face barriers to being heard. Whether we’re making decisions in boardrooms or classrooms, speaking up allows us to advocate not only for ourselves but for everyone who may one day walk the same path.

On this journey, we all need role models, and I am incredibly grateful for the strong women and supportive men who have shaped my life and career. Role models help us envision our own potential and remind us of the power we hold to create change. I hope to be a role model for girls and women in my community, and I proudly serve on the board of Dress for Success Austin, adding my time and talent to ensure this organization can empower as many women as possible.

To all the young women out there: your goals and dreams are valid, no matter how ambitious. Seek out mentors, embrace learning, and let your passion drive you forward. The world needs your voice, your leadership, and your unique perspective. This International Girls Day, let’s celebrate the present while empowering the next generation to build a future they can be proud of.
